    The Number of Possible Stereoisomers

    2n = max possible number of stereoisomers            n = # stereocenters

    Diastereomers

    Diastereomers - non-superimposable (non-identical) non-mirror images
        -molecules with some chiral centers in the same and some in opposite configurations
        -cis/trans isomers are diastereomers
        -generally have different physical properties and can be separated by normal means

    Meso Compounds

    Meso compounds – 1) achiral but 2) having chiral centers
