    Binary Acid Trend

    1. The larger the atom the stronger the acid (weaker bond).

Use when comparing atoms in the same group.

       HI > HBr > HCl > HF

    2. The more electronegative the atom the stronger the acid.

Use when comparing atoms in the same period.

       NH3 < H2O < HF

    binary acid strength trend

    Oxoacid Trend

    1. More oxygens, more acidic (due to resonance)

        HClO4 > HClO3

    trends in oxoacid strength 01

    2. More electronegative central atom, more acidic (inductive effect)

        HClO4 > HBrO4

    trends in oxoacid strength 02

    Polyprotic Acids

Polyprotic acids are successively less acidic as they donate additional H+.
